Children with Autism are amongst the most vulnerable members of our society. They lack the social and communication skills to express their needs and parents can be caught trying to manage behaviors without the time to advocate for greater services.
Therapy services provided on a government level do not meet their own Best Practice standards of 20 hours per week. Private services are difficult to obtain and expensive. On a Federal government level, the needs of children are not being adequately addressed. July 2008 the Autism Pre-School Package was supposed to be available for parents to access $12,000 over a 2 year period prior to a child turning 6 or enrolling at school. This package completely ignores children over 6 years of age and attending school.
All children have the potential for growth and will continue to learn throughout their lives as Autism is a lifelong condition. Autism is a bridge that needs to be crossed between an Autstic world and a nuero-typical world. It is imperative that the Government builds the foundations of the bridge and provide children with the opportunities to overcome their difficulties. Our children will face discrimination in their lives and it is repugnant that our own government is discriminating, based on age, as to the level of support offered to families through funding.
Families need support from the wider community to advocate for greater awareness and funding. I believe community identity is based on how well we collectively meet our responsibilities to the needy and vulnerable. A failure to support, protect and care for the vulnerable reduces us to “a collection of people living in a geographic area”.
You have been directed to this website because you have been touched by Autism or been asked to support our cause. I strongly believe all children with autism have a basic, fundamental right to learn the skills they require to function independently within society regardless of their geography and family financial means.
